Kiran interned at the Carolina Ear and Hearing Clinic with Dr. John McElveen and three audiologists – Kate, Nicolle, and Leah – for his first week of the Work Experience Program at the Carolina Ear & Hearing Clinic. There, he shadowed Dr. McElveen during patient checkups, sat in on hearing aid fittings with the audiologists, dissected a temporal bone in the clinic’s lab, learned how to conduct a hearing test, and even was able to sit in on a tympanoplasty surgical operation in an operating room at Duke Raleigh Hospital! For the second week of the program, Kiran interned with Dr. John Morgan and his team of forensic scientists at RTI International. There he analyzed and identified drugs in substances such as human urine, learned how virtual reality can be useful for simulation of crime scenes by being able to experiment with an “Oculus Rift” headset device to create his own virtual world, and used a smart watch to detect stress levels since the watch is being used on police officers to track their stress during their workday. Kiran had an amazing experience working at these two locations, and he encourages other Cary Academy students to participate in this enlightening program!
